Our next guest in the #WeAreModex series of interviews is Raluca, Modex’s Legal Specialist. Passionate about hiking and climbing to new heights, Raluca is in charge with reviewing the legal implications of the tech solutions developed by our company. We’ve asked her how the innovations brought by Modex in the tech world look like from a vantage point high up on a mountain. Here’s what she had to say.

Raluca completed her law education at University of Bucharest, Faculty of Law. “I have a law degree and a Master’s Degree in business law”, she says speaking about her studies. “Right after graduating from Law school, I started working for an international leading Corporate Law consultancy firm. Throughout my career, I worked with both Romanian companies and the local offices of international companies. My first job gave me the opportunity to have solid knowledge of the corporate regulations and to work with different clients such as banks, food suppliers, media companies. Also, I’ve assisted the incorporation of some technology startups, which fuelled my interest for tech companies.”

“I wanted to study Law from a relatively young age”, continues Raluca. “Being convinced that this was what I wanted to do in life, I did everything with passion. If I were to start my career again, I would do exactly the same thing. However, I sometimes wonder how my career would have looked like if I worked with a different law jurisdiction – that had a different cultural and social impact – such as Japan or China.”

Raluca’s growing interest for tech companies is the reason she decided to take a leap of faith and make a change in her career. “As a young legal specialist in a big company, I didn’t have regular contact with clients too often, it was only via e-mails. I wanted to have direct contact with them, so the people could call me directly to ask questions: Can we do this? How can we do that? What’s the best way to approach this particular issue?”

Therefore, “after two years of working in a big consultancy firm, I decided to take a leap of faith and made the switch to Modex. I found out about this company from a friend, and after an interview with Mihai Ivascu, the CEO and Co-founder, I knew immediately that this was the right place to be. During my time at Modex, I’ve learned that I wasn’t a “know-it-all” person and I’ve also learned new, fascinating things along the way.”

Reviewing the legal implications of the tech solutions

If you’re curious to know more about Raluca’s duties at Modex, wonder no more. “The scale and diversity of innovation and technological development not only keeps things interesting, but they gave me such a wide spectrum of matters: IP, licensing, negotiation”, says our colleague. “At Modex I’m in charge with reviewing the legal implications of the tech solutions developed by our amazing team of developers. I take the complexities around laws and regulations and work with the IT team to make sure that the company is compliant. This is a critical function because non-compliance can result in massive risks for the company. Intellectual property is a big area for tech companies. Companies want to protect their intellectual property from theft and knock-offs drowning the market. IP law also entails licensing matters. We license our technology for sale and use. These agreements need to be negotiated.”

We wanted to find out which were the biggest challenges faced by Raluca since she joined Modex and how she overcame them. “As a tech legal specialist, my colleagues are working closely with me so that I can help them to apply the appropriate legal and business framework keeping in mind that deep understanding of the product front. I can’t do my job well if I don’t really understand how the software product works. This was one of the big challenges after joining Modex because I’ve always considered myself to be a non-technical person. Bridging that gap required a lot of work, but I’m thrilled to learn more from my colleagues about their work. A good thing is that they are always around to help me!”

Modex, writing history in the tech industry

Continuing our pleasant chat with Raluca, we’ve asked her what she likes the most about Modex, a leading Blockchain Database provider. Her answer? “Modex is a technologically innovative company. We take pride in working the latest technologies available on the market. Basically we are writing history in the tech field. I’ve always wanted to be part of such an amazing and successful project. Modex values creativity and our young team is passionate in developing visionary technologies. It is an honour to work with such great minds and be part of the team.”

Trying to describe the working environment at Modex for someone who doesn’t know the company, Raluca adds: “We are intrinsically motivated to do well in our roles, both for our own satisfaction and the company’s success. We are encouraged to think outside of the box. There are no by-the-book rules that inhibit innovation and creativity. We have the space and encouragement we need to grow and prosper. We have transparency, feedbacks flow freely between and among teams. Managers and their colleagues share common objectives and goals, and each member’s interests are vested in team cohesiveness and teamwork.”

Be open minded and work for a higher purpose!

What advice does Raluca have for those who want to start a tech career? “I would advise them to be open-minded and curious in studying so they can work for a higher purpose. They should have the courage to participate in difficult projects. They’ll find that the more they push themselves to be better, the more they evolve. I would tell them not to confuse action with traction, so they should prioritize how and where they direct their energy. So many people are working hard these days, but few achieve something that will matter in the long run.”

“Moreover, I would recommend them to do the things they love because those who spend their time working on things they are passionate about are the ones enjoying life the most. Regarding the IT domain, practicing law in the field of Information Technology is a very rewarding experience. People who want to do this will surely enjoy what they do if they learn to overcome the difficulties and see the beauty of their job!”

Reaching new heights

We couldn’t end our conversation with Raluca without knowing more about her hobbies. “This year I began mountain hiking and I realized that hiking would quickly become my latest hobby. My proudest hiking accomplishment was getting to the top of Moldoveanu peak (2544 m), Romania’s highest mountain peak. While hiking, you must work on your weak sides. I don’t like the feeling of not being in control, but one can hardly control anything while on a mountain: the weather, surroundings, etc. This made me a better person. If you’re on a mountain for hours, alone with your thoughts, it’s like meditation – it makes you so much stronger, both physically and mentally.”
